There has been a lot of talk about abolishing Daylights Savings Time as we know it today. Either way, something is going to change this year (time or policy). On Sunday, March 9th, 2025, at 2am we are set for Daylight Savings to begin for the year once again – unless congress votes against this annual policy and changes it.
The question is “If you abolish this 7 ½ month Policy, what time will it be?”
All four sides to this debate want something to change. (Yes, four sides on this one)
The first side wants to only change the clocks and loves Daylight Savings Time. The second side, Does not care what time it is as long as it is not time to change their clocks every year. They are tired of changing their clocks twice every year to compensate for more productive hours in the day during the summer months (Daylight Savings Time) and then changing back in the Winter for the same effect of having more productive hours during daytime working hours. (Standard Time). Both these opponents say it is unproductive the other way.
If this changing of the clock between Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time for seven ½ months is abolished, Then the debate turns to which time will be year around. This debate is known as Annual Daylight Savings Time versus Annual Standard Time Debate. (remember we cannot have both now, we tried that)
Daylight Savings Time in America started and stopped a few times in our history, mostly during World War I and World War II. The thought was to conserve energy and resources by allowing productive hours to be during daylight hours. Unfortunately, it meant going back and forth one hour annually to compensate for the sunset. In 1966, The Uniform Time Act of 1966 established a uniform set of rules stating America recognizes Daylight savings time in all states except for – Arizona and Hawaii. (who refused to recognize).
This year 2025, Daylight Savings Time would take place on Sunday, March 9th at 2 am, time as we know it will change to 3 am in a split second. This spring forward effect would continue until Sunday, November 2nd at 2 am when time would Fall back to 1 am in a split second. If Standard Time gets replaced with Daylights Savings Time year around, November 2nd will come and go with no time change. The sun will set an hour earlier this winter, and it will be dark before many people get home from work. If Standard Time becomes year around, March 9th will come and go without a time change, then in the Summer the sun would set one hour earlier.
It sounds confusing but really is not when you think about this scenario. No one can change when the sun goes up or down, we can only change what time we acknowledge it is going up and down and this is what the Third and fourth side are arguing about called The Annual Daylight Savings Time versus Annual Standard Time debate.
With that said, try not to lose any sleep over it, (oops) something has to change this year - Time or Policy. “Only time will tell.”
